My fish-forward journey often relies on taking a dish I already love (spiced shawarma!) and remaking it using seafood instead of meat. Hello, Salmon Shawarma. Where have you been all my life?
Adding homemade shawarma spice mix to a rich side of salmon is one of my favorite seafood makeovers, where we make a dish we already love using fish instead of meat.
Salmon is the ideal seafood to take on the complex flavors of shawarma blend. But I've used this spice mix on shrimp and chickpeas and they're both delicious!
Ingredients for fish shawarma recipe:
Before we get to the step by step directions, a few notes about the ingredients:
Fish: I love the ease and impressive nature of serving a large piece of salmon that I flake up before serving. If you're working with individual fillets, that works, too! Just reduce the cooking time by a few minutes. Shrimp, white fish and chickpeas are also great options.
Spice mix: homemade is best. Grab my easy recipe for Shawarma Seasoning Blend, or grab your favorite ready-made mix.
Lemon juice: citrus is ideal, but substitute white wine vinegar, if needed.

Step by step instructions:
Step 1: Marinate salmon
Combine homemade shawarma spice blend with extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon juice in a bowl. Mix well into a rich paste.
Next, use a pastry brush to cover your salmon with the shawarma spice paste, ensuring an even coating over the fish.
Set aside to marinate for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Roast fish
Preheat oven to 425℉. If salmon was in the refrigerator, place it on the counter to come up to room temperature. Move salmon to oven and bake for 10-12 minutes. Switch to broil for another 4-5 minutes for a browned and crispy top.
Step 3: Garnish and serve
Remove salmon from the oven and rest for 5 minutes. Flake the salmon.
Serve in shawarma wraps with Jerusalem Salad, Shawarma Sauce and Middle Eastern Yellow Rice.
